Who’s the spy 🕵️‍♀️?

Yesterday’s English Practice we dedicated to board games which are always fun and exciting. For this session we chose a game “Spyfall” - one of the favorite games among our visitors. We asked lots of questions to find out who the spy was whereas the spy had to guess the place.

What is love?

It’s a really hard question to find the answer on it. And yesterday during the khersonspeakingclub we tried to discuss this and other questions!

About 20 adults, members of #speakingclub came to woafl_kherson to improve their english with peacecorpsvolunteers. At the beginning we watched a video about the history of valentines_day and learned new vocabulary on this topic, some new phrases, idioms and lovequotes.

Then, working in groups we made a list of words, connected to love and then presented it to others. We had a really great meeting and even didn’t notice that the club had finished. Hope to see all of these wonderfulpeople next time

Super Bowl

What do you know about the Super Bowl🏈? Why is it such a big deal? What does it mean to Americans? 

 

These and other questions were discussed yesterday at Window on America Center for Future leaders during the Kherson Speaking Club. Our friends, Peace Corps Volunteers - Nina Jackson and Whitney Cravens prepared a really good presentation about this event which is very popular in the United States. The Super Bowl is the annual championship game of the National Football League played in early February. Whitney is a big fan of American football and she explained us the main things about the Super Bowl and its rules.

 Watching and discussing the broadcast’s commercials has become a significant aspect of the event so we watched the “Top 10 Super Bowl Ads” this year and discussed them. Thanks all visitors and of course our American guest for holding this club.

Amazing Facts about Animals

Last Sunday, January 26 there was a meeting of English Club that works on Sundays at Window on America Center for future leaders was dedicated to "Animals 🐶🐴🐝🐘🐅🦓". Three groups of children got to know about unusual facts about these living creatures, played different games, and tried to remember the names of all animals. The games "Kahoot" and “A to Z” are popular among our visitors.

Thanks Peace Corps Volunteer, Nina Jackson, who took part in meeting with children and helped us to improved our English. With students we were practicing in grammar first and then we played "Lexico" which is always fun.

Art

A very interesting topic about #art🎨 was at @woafl_kherson during the @khersonspeakingclub. We started with an “A to Z” activity in order to remember some words connected with art 🖼. 

Then we watched a video “Art History in 3 minutes” and went through discussion questions which @antonivkawithnina prepared in advance and could to add some our own questions . After that we tried ourselves in drawing and did fun activities. We “reproduced” some artworks by drawing everything that our partner told us to. It was funny 😄 when we compared two pictures. 

And another game was “Telephone Pictionary” where instead of whispering sentences to people our visitors drew them. During today’s meeting we felt that time flies really quickly because we hadn’t done some more activities but anyway we had lots of fun with our friend, #peacecorpsvolunteer Nina Jackson.

#healthy lifestyle

Everyone’s having a desire to be #healthy so yesterday’s meeting at Window on America for Future Leaders Kherson was dedicated to #healthylifestyle. Members of #coolspeaking club (most of them are youth) discussed some questions and shared their experiences of healthy living style. Our American volunteers told us how this style of living is different in the United States and we compared it with Ukraine. We also read some #quotes of famous people about health and explained their meaning. Thanks to Americans we could talked about this important topic in English and next Wednesday we decided to continue discussing it.

The Beatles

January 16th is the world holiday “The Beatles”. 63 years ago the club “Cavern” was opened where The #beatles began their career. So @woafl_kherson had 2 meetings dedicated to this legendary band 🎤🎸. 

Active members of #coolspeaking club and @khersonspeakingclub had a chance to learn new information about the #singers and their popularity through the activities which were prepared by #peacecorpsvolunteers and other American guests🇺🇸.

 We discussed a lot about the music 🎶 in general and rated for the most famous songs of this band. During both meetings we sang along #yellowsubmarine, #letitbe and #yesterday songs. And one more fun activity was #runningdictation where visitors of @khersonspeakingclub had to read the line of one of the song and say it to his team as fast as he could. At the end of today’s meeting @antonivkawithnina (our friend and Peace Corps volunteer) played the guitar while the rest group of people sang the “Let it Be” song.

Kherson Speaking Club is back to work

After a long break Kherson Speaking Club came back to Window on America center for future leaders and yesterday there was a meeting dedicated to New Year’s Day. Peace Corps Volunteers Nina Jackson and Whitney Cravens came with other American citizens who are currently live in Ukraine as volunteers. We started with the Year End Reflections and answered some questions about the last year. Then we compared the traditions of celebrations winter holidays in the USA and Ukraine and remembered all things happened in 2019 through the "Trivia". And of course everybody heard about the resolutions and so we all came up with 3 of them. At the end we had time to talk with native speakers for a while.

Regions of the United States

A big event was at Window on America for Future Leaders Kherson today where we met 8 #peacecorpsvolunteers at once who presented us the topic "Regions of the United States".

And we had a great number of visitors - about 50 people different age (students from the gymnasium 1 and "School of the liberal art" and adults) came to get acquainted with #native speakers. So the visitors were divided into 3 groups and "travelled" to every US region.

We had 4 locations: The South (Sarah Winter and Holly Furgason), the West (Casey Forgey and Hannah Ferguson), the Northeast (Nina Jackson and Leah Chaney) and the Midwest (Mattea Pezza and Sarah Rosenthal).

In every "region" visitors found out about the states and their cities, culture and history and of course did different activities, such as playing "Jeopardy" and "Corn" games, made up some songs about Kherson and even we tryed some food - "soft pretzels" from the east coast, "dry corn" from the Midwest and "corn bread" from the South region. We even had time for free speaking during the coffee break. Afterwards we all gathered again upstairs to summarize information we got and did an American Trivia.

Inspite the event had been lasted for 5 hours some visitors didn't want to leave and asked americans different questions

Wonderful meeting of khersonspeakingclub

Yesterday there was a wonderful meeting of khersonspeakingclub dedicated to different lifestyles. Woafl_kherson was pleased to meet active members of the club who improve their english with native speakers. Our peacecorpsvolunteers Nina Jackson and Whitney Cravens did a great presentation with lots of activities.

Firstly we discussed different lifestyles such as healthy, adventurious, active, alternative, extravagant, dangerous. Then we played a debate game where we moved from corner to corner if we agree with statesments or disagree. Then we learnt some idioms about life and made some sentences with them. And of course we worked in groups and discussed some essential questions and created an #instagram stories about people's lifestyles.

Coolspeaking club

It is always great to see new faces at @woafl_kherson where they come to take part in some #English_club sessions.

Yesterday we met 3 new students at #coolspeaking club and got acquianted with each other. Our american guests, Troy Burton and Ethan Robison helped to improve our English. We started with an #icebreaking game "Two truths and a lie", then we played two more #boardgames "Alias" and "Lexico junior".

We tryed to explain some words that were written by our visitors and then made up sentences with them. "Lexico Junior" helped us to remember english grammar because children had to use three different pictures to make a story
