This week I had the pleasure of hosting engaging online meetings with groups of high students on a topic that resonated with everyone: hobbies. But instead of just listing favorite activities, we dug deeper and explored how hobbies are far far more than ways to fill free time - they’re powerful tools for personal growth, mental health, and even future careers. During all session, students reflected on how their pastimes teach them discipline, creativity, problem-solving etc. To wrap up, I asked students to set a small goal: try something new or spend a little more time on a favorite hobby this week - not because they “have to” but because it adds something meaningful to their lives. We all came up with an idea that hobbies might be an anchor - a safe space where they can express, explore and just be themselves.

Finding the Silver Lining: English Practice with a Twist of Mystery
Sometimes it’s hard to find the “silver lining” (positive moment) in everyday life, especially when everything goes wrong. However, our youth from Kherson and Mariupol who joined our Speaking Practice, working all together, could see good aspects of the given situations. We started with a warm conversation about personal challenges and the lessons they brought. Participants shared real-life experiences and inspiring stories, reflecting on how moments helped them grow stronger and more motivated.

What's the CLUE?
Are you good at solving problems?
Last English Speaking Session, our youth from Kherson and Mariupol gathered for another exciting online meeting, and this time it had a mysterious twist! We played the classic detective game “CLUE”, combining fun, logic and language learning. Guided by our American friend, a VSPP, the participants took on the roles of iconic characters working together, listening carefully and asking clever questions. Clue isn’t just a game - it’s fantastic way to practice English. Players had to revise using some of the grammar structures, practicing polite forms and deduction language.
Everyone had so much fun that we all decided to play this game next time. So stay tuned.

Beyond awareness: what it means to be conscious?
One of our latest English Speaking Practices for advanced level we dedicated to fascinating topic “What it means to be conscious” Through engaging discussions, role-plays, and ethical dilemmas, participants explored how conscience influences decision-making in daily life. Before diving into deeper discussions, we introduced some useful idioms related to conscience “gut feeling”, “inner voice”, “guilty conscience”, “turn a blind eye” etc. and made up some sentences. Of course, one of the engaging tasks was series of real-life ethical dilemmas, where participants had to decide what they would do in morally challenging situations. Some of the scenarios included: "Finding a lost wallet – Would you return it, even if there was no ID inside?"; "Witnessing a friend cheat on an exam – Would you report them, or keep silent?"; "Making a serious mistake at work – Would you admit it, or try to cover it up?"
This session proved that discussing deep, meaningful topics in English not only improves language skills but also encourages critical thinking and self-reflection.
